How I got started.
Start young. Start small.
I didn't need to get a loan for any of this because because I slowly built up my company from a $350 check.
Why you should do it.
You get money for video equipment. If your goal is simply to have money to buy gear for your films, you're going to have a lot of fun with this. As I mentioned earlier, I started with only a camera and a broken tripod, but because of those gigs I was able to considerably grow my set. I never liked DIY (sorry IndyMogul) so being able to afford what I needed was a huge benefit.
You learn to do things outside the box. There is no set way of doing things in the film industry. Starting my company taught me some valuable skills that I'll use in my film career and in life in general. Learning the concepts of advertising, budgeting, networking, & sales has been helpful in all areas of my life, including starting a little website called RodyPolis.com! Even if you were to make no profits, the experience alone would be worth it.
You also get to improve your filmmaking skills. Doing music videos improved my lighting, color grading, and directing skill significantly.
You get to meet cool people. The film industry is all about networking. Being a video entrepreneur will not only allow you to meet other filmmakers, but also singers, actors, models, business owners etc. Meeting all those people will grow your network and will definitely help your film career down the road.
It's an adventure. When I was 17 I moved to Miami for college and got some gigs there too. For one music video we got to film at night on the roof of a 5 Star hotel downtown. It was actually on my 18th birthday and I remember looking at the skyline and all the extras while being amazed that this was really happening. Best birthday present ever!
Make a living. That is the big one! It's also the hardest one to achieve. In my experience, if you're charging under $1000 for work you'll have no shortage of potential clients calling you, but once you go over $1000 things start to get more difficult. Nevertheless, it is possible to live long and prosper on video projects alone, so keep at it if that's your goal.
